Common challenges and solutions to creating a daily spiritual practice
My work as a spiritual advisor has taught me a few things and one is that so many of us are finding our way in the world and trying to incorporate spiritual practices into our daily life. More and more people are searching for meaningful ways to incorporate spirituality into their everyday routines.
Questions I often receive are: How do I stick these spiritual practices everyday? Or what daily rituals do I need to do or what will bring me guidance?
I want to share how incorporating a daily ritual can connect you to your truth and to the divine guidance we all have access to.
Why Daily Spiritual Practices Matter
In our fast-paced world, maintaining a spiritual practice isn't just about religion – it's about finding inner peace, purpose, and balance. Research shows that people who engage in regular spiritual practices experience lower stress levels, improved mental health, and a greater sense of life satisfaction.
We can have a deeper connection to nature, our ancestors and our own should by incorporating daily rituals. And when we practice everyday we are able to deepen this connection with each day that passes. Remember it takes time and consistency to develop a relationship with yourself and your practices.
Setting up your practice
What has helped me and my clients most is to begin to analyze my day and what rituals we are already doing. For example, perhaps the laundry you are folding is a time you connect with your ancestors. Being intentional in your daily life with rituals you are already doing allows you to be more consistent and slowly make changes.
Where do you begin?
What do you want to accomplish?
First, you need to find your why. Why do you want to start a daily spiritual practice? Are you feeling disconnected from yourself?
Journal on your why and what you want to accomplish. Most women I work with want to find peace or a place to set intentions. They want feel deeply connected to themselves and to their soul. Or they are wanting to create a space to release what no longer serves them. It could also be a mix of all the things. Remember this is your practice.
How much time, energy and capacity do you have each day?
This is the biggest reason I see people fail to stick to their daily routines. They don’t take into consideration the actual time they have. If you are a busy mom of 3 who owns a business you might not have 2 hours in the morning to spend on your spiritual practice.
Look at your schedule and see what time and when you can add in some of the practices. You can always start with 5 minutes and add in time as you learn what your own rhythm is and what you actual need.
And your energy and time may change with the seasons of nature and the seasons of your own life. For example, in the summer you may have a more relaxed schedule that allows you more time in the morning. Or you can have a condensed version that you use when you or your family is sick or busy. The more fluid you can make this the better.
What are your daily rituals you are already doing?
As I mentioned above, your daily habits can be made more intentional. Such as talking with your soul as you drink your coffee. Look at your daily habits and see what practices you can add to the rituals you are already doing.
This is one of the main things I work on with my own clients and myself, looking at the daily rituals and seeing how you can add your spiritual practice.
For example, when I used to walk my daughter to her bus stop I would take an extra 10 minutes after to walk in nature around the neighborhood. I was already out and about and could easily add this in. Not only did it help me to slow down it was an easy way for me to add in a walking meditation to my daily routine.
Daily Spiritual Practices for Beginners
Now that you have looked at the how it’s time to implement. This isn’t a pass or fail type routine. Allow time to explore and give yourself at least a month of trying these new routines before adding in more. Add in one simple shift and see how you feel. Slowly adding in more as you go. After a year you will have daily spiritual practices that allow you to flow throughout your day.
1. Mindful Morning Meditation
Start your day with just 10 minutes of quiet reflection. Find a comfortable spot, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. This simple practice sets a positive tone for your entire day and helps you stay centered amid life's challenges.
I love to do this on my front porch while listening to the birds with my cup of coffee.
I also have a 21 days meditation you can purchase to help you start this simple ritual.
2. Gratitude Journaling
Take a few moments each evening to write down three things you're thankful for. This practice shifts your mindset from lack to abundance and helps you recognize the sacred in everyday moments. And keeping a journal allows you to look back at past days and see all the miracles.
Journaling is a great way to connect with yourself and your spiritual practices. You can also journal on how you feel after your practices and what impact they have made to your life.
3. Nature Connection Rituals
Spend time outdoors daily, even if it's just a short walk. Notice the beauty around you – the rustling leaves, the warmth of sunlight, the fresh air.
Nature provides a direct connection to the divine and helps ground our spiritual energy. Over the years I have come up with a concept I call, Nature’s Oracle. This is practice of going outside and allowing nature to be your oracle deck.
As you observe nature you will come across different plants and animals. For example the first bird you see is a cardinal, that could be your grandparents sending a message to you. You can “pull” as many cards as you like and observe nature and what appears to you. You can look up the meaning of the plants and animals or you can make up your own.
4. Sacred Reading Practice
Dedicate 15 minutes to reading spiritual texts, poetry, or inspirational literature. This could be from any tradition that resonates with you, allowing wisdom to guide your daily life. Take the time to integrate this wisdom, and share insights with your community.
As you read you can begin to allow that energy to flow thru your life and feel the energy of others who have walked this path or walking along side with you.
Advanced Spiritual Practices for Deeper Connection
1. Energy Clearing Techniques
Learn to cleanse your personal space and energy field using methods like energy medicine, sound healing, or visualization. These practices help maintain spiritual hygiene and protect your sacred space.
This is really the next step after you start. This will help get rid of the weight of the world and allow you to reset your energy daily.
2. Intentional Movement
Incorporate spiritual movement practices like yoga, tai chi, or sacred dance into your routine. These practices unite body, mind, and spirit while promoting physical wellness. You can also do you energy cleansing techniques in combination with this movement.
And moving the body helps release emotions you are holding onto. Moving the body is so important and often times we think spiritual practices are sitting down in stillness when that is just one way to practice. Remember to take up space and use the body as moving prayer.
Creating Your Personal Spiritual Routine
Remember that spirituality is deeply personal. Start with practices that resonate with you and gradually build your routine. The key is consistency rather than perfection. Listen to your inner guidance and adjust your practices as needed. Talk to your inner advisor, this is your advisor to finding all the spiritual practices that resonate with you.
Common challenges and solutions to creating a daily spiritual practice
Time Constraints: Start with just 5 minutes daily. It is better to have a short amount of time and create the routine than to put it off because you can’t do exactly what you want to do.
Consistency Issues: Link practices to existing habits. THIS is the easiest way to start. Want to start talking with your ancestors invite them in when your washing dishes. Stack those practices.
Mental Resistance: Begin with simple practices and gradually expand. You don’t have to astral travel to another dimension on your second week of meditations. If you get to the 6 PM crash time all us parents have and you keep your peace, it’s working!
Final Thoughts
Your spiritual journey is unique and beautiful. These daily practices serve as guideposts, but the most important aspect is your commitment to showing up for yourself each day. Start where you are, use what you have, and trust the process.
